40-Hour Reading Opportunities

Who Needs the 40 hours?

Starting with renewals in 2025, as per Section 1012.585(3)(f) F.S., ANYONE with the following areas on their Florida Teaching Certificate MUST acquire 40 hours of professional learning credits “specifically designed for students with characteristics of dyslexia, including the use of explicit, systematic, and sequential approaches to reading instruction, developing phonological and phonemic awareness, decoding, and implementing multisensory intervention strategies:”

  • Elementary Education (K-6)
  • Prekindergarten/Primary Education (age 3 through grade 3)
  • Elementary Education (grades 1-6), Primary Education (grades K-3)
  • English (grades 1-6), Middle Grades English (grades 5-9)
  • Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum (grades 5-9)
  • English (6-12)
  • Reading (K-12)
  • Reading (Endorsement)
  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) (grades K-12)- this is certification ONLY- Endorsement does not fall into this category
  • ESE (K-12) – this goes into effect for the 2025-2030 validity period.  These folks will need the 40 hours to renew in 2030.  

How Can I Earn the 40 points for Certification Renewal?

The following are currently the only methods to fulfill this requirement:

 

  • Exploring Structured Literacy (40 hours) FDLRS -- To Receive Credit:  Submit certificate of completion to your school's literacy coach upon completion.  This course may only be offered between August 10 – April 30 each school year as per FDLRS/FLDOE. 
  • Science of Reading: An Introduction (5 hours) FDLRS -- To Receive Credit: Submit certificate of completion to your school's literacy coach  upon completion.
  • Literacy  Micro-Credential-ELEMENTARY (60 hours) UF Flamingo -- To Receive Credit:  Submit transcript/certificate of completion to your school's literacy coach upon completion.  This course is offered through UF Flamingo $1000 Stipend for teachers or paras.  Please refer to the Literacy Matrix and Micro-Credential web pages for full eligibility and completion guidelines and direct all questions to [email protected].
  • Literacy  Micro-Credential-SECONDARY (60 hours)  UF Flamingo -- To Receive Credit:  Submit transcript/certificate of completion to your school's literacy coach upon completion.  This course is offered through UF Flamingo  $1000 Stipend for teachers or paras.  Please refer to the Literacy Matrix and Micro-Credential web pages for full eligibility and completion guidelines and direct all questions to [email protected].
  • Literacy  Micro-Credential-EMERGENT (60 hours)  UF Flamingo -- To Receive Credit:  Submit transcript/certificate of completion to your school's literacy coach upon completion.  This course is offered through UF Flamingo  $1000 Stipend for early learning personnel and childcare providers.  Please refer to the Literacy Matrix and Micro-Credential web pages for full eligibility and completion guidelines and direct all questions to [email protected].
  • Reading Endorsement Coursework (60 hours per course) -- To Receive Credit:  Submit transcript/certificate of completion to your school's literacy coach upon completion.  This course is offered through UF Flamingo.  $2,000 Stipend for TEACHERS!  Please refer to the Literacy Matrix and Micro-Credential web pages for full eligibility and completion guidelines and direct all questions to [email protected].

5. Click Search (If nothing comes up, then there are no courses available

at this time)

7. Complete the course according to the guidelines provided by your course facilitator

8. Complete the Course Survey

9. Receive the Certificate of Completion from your course facilitator

8. Submit the written task and verification form to your school's literacy coach

9. Upload the signed vertification form as your last assignment for the course

2. Register

*Anyone who has completed the the elementary or secondary micro-credential has already completed Competency 1

3. Complete the 6 week courses.

4. Receive the Certificate of Completion from UF FLamingo

5. Submit the Certificate of Completion to Robin Hill.  Mrs. Hill will verify completion for the personnel office.

6. Apply to have the endorsement added to your certificate.  Email Mrs. Linda Irvine to request for her to provide the completion verification to FLDOE.
